Twitter now in Hindi

This means users can now choose to read instructions on the micro-blogging site in the national language.

MUMBAI: Coinciding with Hindi Diwas, Twitter on Wednesday launched a Hindi interface for its service. This means users can now choose to read instructions on the micro-blogging site in the national language.

The soft launch has come exactly a month after the San Francisco-based site asked for volunteers to help in the translation. A similar drive is being undertaken by Twitter's Translation Center to translate its pages into 16 other languages, including simplified Chinese, traditional Chinese, Malay and Filipino.

To activate Hindi, users can visit Twitter Settings page and change the language to Hindi. This will convert interface instructions like 'What's happening?' to 'Kya ho rahan hain?' in the Devanagari script. Last week, Twitter announced that it has over 100 million active users around the globe and revealed it would soon launch support in different languages. The move has come after a 2010 study revealed that only 50% tweets were in English.
