Reliance Jio aims to achieve 500 million subscribers in 3 years, says Mukesh Ambani

Reliance Jio will aim to get 500 million customers in the next three years, said Mukesh Ambani, chairman and managing director of parent Reliance Industries. The target will bring in stronger revenue from subscribers and will give Jio a clean sweep over rivals.

"In the next three years, Jio will connect half a billion mobile customers, a billion smart sensors and 50 million home and business establishments:," said Ambani at the 43rd AGM of the oil to telecom major.

The telco which made its debut in September 2016, today has nearly 400 million customers and is way ahead of rivals. Vodafone Idea's base has slipped to 291 million customers, but slightly higher than Airtel's just over 284 million.


The latest target for Jio comes at a time when the war for subscribers is gone beyond tariff plans and is concentrated on services. Jio which has a 4G base has an edge over the other two since they are still migrating customers from 2G and 3G into 4G.

Brokerage firm Credit Suisse in a recent report estimated that the telco will gain 500 million subscribers from its current 388 million and also clock in an ARPU of Rs 200, from Rs 130.6 of 4QFY20 . Average revenue per user (ARPU) is a key parameter to gauge a telco's performance .
