Malware detections surge by 48% in 2019

Endpoint and network security provider Seqrite detected over 146 million enterprise threats in 2019, a 48% increase over 2018 according to the Seqrite Annual Threat Report 2020, identified by Quick Heal Technologies. Almost a quarter of these were identifi ed through signatureless behaviour detection, indicating that cyber criminals were deploying new or previously unknown threat vectors.

Threat researchers observed several large-scale advanced persistent threats (APT) attacks deployed against organisations in the government sector, including prominent attack campaigns such as Operation m_project and BackDoor.

DTrack. This highlights how cyber criminals were turning to newer, more nuanced attack methodologies to steal sensitive data of national importance.

The entry of nation states and organised cyber crime cells into the fray is expected to add more complication to this situation and will require Indian government agencies and companies to shore up their cyber defence strategies in 2020 and beyond.
