LONDON: Facebook has emerged as the clear winner when it comes to Google UK's most searched term of 2008. The social networking site beat BBC to the top spot followed by the popular video sharing You Tube.

eBay, the online auction and shopping website in which people and businesses buy and sell goods and services worldwide, grabbed the fourth place.

Wrapping up the top five terms surfed on the world's most popular search engine was the ever-increasing hunt for games, reports the Sun.

Interestingly, Matt Brittin, Google UK director, revealed that the economic slump and companies' employee lay-offs had led millions of surfers searching for "jobs" in the top 10 list.

He said:"We have seen a huge shift with people using Google to look for ways to save money and find bargains."
