MUMBAI: Reliance Jio's average peak download speed more than doubled to 17.42 megabit per second (mbps) at the end of January, according to data by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India.

The monthly average mobile broadband speed published by the Trai the average speed at the end of December for Mukesh Ambani owned Reliance Jio was 8.34 mbps.

Following Jio was Kumar Mangalam Birla owned Idea Cellular whose download speed rose from 6.6mbps in December to 8.53 mbps in January.

The download speed on Airtel network however dipped to 8.15 mbps compared to 8.42 mbps in the previous month.

Like Airtel, Vodafone and BSNL also dipped slightly to 6.13 mbps and 2.89 mbps from 6.8 mbps and 3.16 mbps, respectively.

The data showed average download speed of 2.3 mbps on Tata Docomo network. Average download speeds of other networks were not available.

Data and its speed will determine the position of the warring telcos in India. There has been a constant cut in voice and data packages to match Jio 's offers and prevent customers from joining the new operator.
