AOL in talks to buy technology blog site TechCrunch: Report

Internet services entity AOL Inc is in discussions to snap up high profile technology blog site TechCrunch, says a media report.

NEW YORK: Internet services entity AOL Inc is in discussions to snap up high profile technology blog site TechCrunch, says a media report.

The Wall Street Journal has reported that both companies are in talks for a potential deal but terms and status could not be learnt.

"It would also be the latest in a series of alliances between content and Internet companies, which are seeking to draw more users and advertisers by pumping out inexpensive articles on popular topics like fashion, news and sports," the daily said.

Quoting people familiar with the matter, the report pointed out that AOL and TechCrunch had acquisition discussions a few years ago. "... there is no guarantee a deal could materialise this time," it added.

The talks come against the backdrop of many online publishers raising questions about the profitability of web news outlets like blogs, that rely heavily on advertising.

Founded in 2005, TechCrunch is one of the most influential blogs in Silicon Valley, covering industry buzz and news.
