2014 has been extremely newsy for Twitter India
NEW DELHI: From Narendra Modi’s victory to India’s Mars Orbiter, the year has been extremely newsy for Twitter India. While the world sends out over 500 million tweets a day, India’s PM Narendra Modi stood out this year on Twitter in terms of trends, but the Aam Aadmi Party generated the maximum interest in positive as well as negative tweets. Politically, about half of all trends were in support of the Bharatiya Janata Party. In addition to this, the conversation that Mangalyaan’s twitter account had with NASA’s Curiosity Mars Rover was one of the most retweeted tweets of 2014. In terms of the most ‘newsy’ hashtags, the floods in Jammu and Kashmir were clearly important.

Rajinikanth joined Twitter on May 4 (or Twitter joined Rajinikanth, as the quip goes) and within 24 hours over 2 lakh fans followed him. His joining day was the fastest growth of fans in a given day for any Indian joining Twitter.

Globally, it was the mysterious disappearance of the Malaysian Airlines flight MH370 and Ellen Degeneres’ Oscar Selfie that broke Twitter.
