On Tuesday, Bengaluru’s civic authority BBMP continued with its demolition of encroachments on stormwater drains in Mahadevapura zone, which is also a hub for technology companies.

The encroachments blocked the free flow of rainwater causing floods making Mahadevapura the worst affected zone in Bengaluru forcing authorities to rescue stranded people with boats and tractors, two weeks ago.

Software giant Wipro, which also figures on the BBMP’s list, said in a statement that it was committed to supporting the ecology of the area it operated in. “We are proactively working with BBMP to increase the capacity and access of the stormwater drain passing through our Doddakannelli campus, built as per plans sanctioned by concerned authorities. Wipro has also opened a part of the compound wall to enable BBMP to carry out these efforts easily,” the statement said.

Tech park developer Bagmane on Tuesday carried out demolitions on its own on portions of its structure at Bagmane WTC.

The Outer Ring Road Companies Association (ORRCA) said the BBMP’s demolition drive had covered DivyaSree 77 Degree East, RmZ Ecospace, Gopalan International School, Nalapad Academy, T-Zed approach road, Purva Parkridge, Wipro, Prestige properties, Borewell Road, Epsilon, Yemalur, and Bagmane Tech Park.

The BBMP has deployed four demolition teams in Mahadevapura zone and additional manpower from other zones.

The demolitions have followed a recent inspection of the area by Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai and a meeting between IT/BT Minister CN Ashwath Narayan with top tech sector representatives. The two sides had decided to jointly find a permanent solution to the issue of waterlogging in the city following incessant rainfall over the last few days that affected citizens and several tech firms in two key tech suburbs. The Minister had pledged that the government would solve the flooding issue by the next monsoon.
