Olympus Corporation, the Japanese medical technology major, on Wednesday said it will establish a Research & Development (R&D) Offshore Development Center (ODC) in Hyderabad.

The decision follows a strategic agreement with HCL Tech, aimed at expanding Olympus' innovation generation activities globally.

Olympus is planning to leverage local talent and resources in India to drive advancements in medical technology.


Olympus currently has R&D centers in Japan, US and Europe.

In addition to the creation of the ODC, Olympus will collaborate with AIG Hospitals, Hyderabad, on joint research projects. The partnership with AIG aims to leverage clinical expertise and insights to drive the development of innovative medical solutions that address the evolving needs of patients worldwide.

Since establishing Olympus Medical Systems India Private Limited in 2009, the company has continually expanded its operations in India, achieving significant growth with the support of its many stakeholders.

Olmpus makes medical devices such as endoscopy, endotherapy, imaging systems, surgical instruments, among others.

The decision to establish R&D and ODC following meetings of Olympus senior leadership with Telangana government during BioAsia 2024. Hyderabad with its technology talent is becoming a hub for R&D and offshore centres of global pharma and medtech companies. Companies such as Novartis, BMS, Bayer and Medtronics have opened their centres in Hyderabad, and have been hiring talent to support their global R&D and business operations.
