Sun Microsystems to offer discounts for start-ups

Sun Microsystems will extend a discount programme for start-up companies in India & China, to meet rising demand in Asia's two fastest-growing economies.

BEIJING: Sun Microsystems will extend a discount programme for start-up companies in India and China, the first of its kind outside of the US, to meet rising demand in Asia's two fastest-growing economies.

"The fastest growth of developers in the world is in China and in India," Juan Carlos Soto, Sun's vice president of market development said today. "There is a rapid growth of venture investing and entrepreneurship in Asia."

Santa Clara, California-based Sun introduced the Startup Essential Programe in the US in November to offer eligible companies products and services at discounted prices.

The company, whose customers include EBay Inc and Viacom Inc's Paramount Pictures, trails International Business Machines Corp, Hewlett-Packard and Dell Inc in sales of server computers. Companies rely on the machines to manage networks and Web sites.

Servers, computers used to run corporate networks and Web sites, are Sun's main business, accounting for about 47 per cent of revenue in the fiscal year ended June 30.
