Strong dollar may impact computer industry: HCL executive

A firm dollar against rupee is likely to affect computer manufacturers, a senior industry official said on Monday.

MUMBAI: A firm dollar against rupee is likely to affect computer manufacturers, a senior industry official said on Monday.

"Computer-makers are expected to be impacted directly due to firming up of dollar value. The projection is of dollar rising further (and this) may hit the industry as there is a huge amount of import content used by the computer industry," HCL Infosystems Executive Vice-President-Marketing George Paul told reporters on the sidelines of a conference here.

To a query on HCL's foray into ATM manufacturing and whether it would boost its bottomline, Paul said it was difficult to say but it would add to the company's portfolio of complete banking solutions.

Commenting on the current quarter (Jan-March), Paul said HCL reported a flat gross profit and marginal decline in the net profit during the quarter ended December 2008.

"We have to see how it grows in the current quarter, but we are happy that the Indian economy is growing (at good pace) and that is a good sign for us," he said.

HCL is a $5-billion leading global technology and IT enterprise that comprises two companies listed in India - HCL Infosystems and HCL Technologies.
