Sony launches latest flagship smartphone Xperia Z2 for Rs 49,990

Sony India on Thursday launched its latest flagship smartphone for 2014, the Xperia Z2 in India. Priced at Rs 49,990, the Xperia Z2 improves upon its predecessor in many ways - it has a substantially better display, improved hardware and now includes 4K video recording. What's more, the price includes Sony's Smartband - a fitness tracker that connects to the phone via Bluetooth. The Smartband is a Rs 5,990 value and is included in the box for free - thus the device undercuts other flagship rivals like Samsung's Galaxy S5 and HTC One M8 by a fair margin.

Continuing with the 'Omnibalance' unibody design, the Xperia Z2 has an aluminum chassis with scratch resistant glass on both sides. Like its predecessor, it meets IP58 certification for dust and water resistance. It comes with a 5.2-inch full HD IPS display that uses Sony’s proprietary Triluminos display with X-Reality Engine. Hardware includes the latest (and top-of-the-line) 2.3Ghz quad core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, Adreno 330 graphics 3GB RAM, 16GB storage and a 3,200mAh battery. Sony has retained the 20.7MP camera from the Xperia Z1 but added 4K video recording support. Plus, it runs the latest Android 4.4 OS with a new Sony Xperia user interface.

Notably, Xperia Z2 is one of the first phones to come with MHL 3.0 port. MHL 3 supports 4K video output, faster charging and data transfer via a single cable. It is also one of the few phones that can accept 128GB microSD cards for expansion.

Wireless connectivity is taken care with 3G, WiFi, WiFi Direct, NFC (Near Field Communication) and Bluetooth 4.0. Other features include 2.2MP front camera, accelerometer, gyro, proximity, compass, barometer, stereo FM and active noise cancellation with dedicated microphone.

The phone will be available across major stores and online retailers from 12 May onwards.
