RIM gets backing from COAI

BlackBerry maker Research in Motion (RIM) on Tuesday received support from the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) on the decryption of messages issue that has raised questions about the survival of the mobile maker’s survival here.

HYDERABAD: BlackBerry maker Research in Motion (RIM) on Tuesday received support from the Cellular Operators Association of India ( COAI) on the decryption of messages issue that has raised questions about the survival of the mobile maker’s survival here.

Rajan S Matthews, director-general , COAI said it is very difficult to provide help to the Government to decrypt messages which run into millions. “Encryption and decryption is a government responsibility.

Operator cannot provide text messages to the government,” he said on the sidelines of a workshop on ‘ Radiation from mobile towers’. He said all the issues of BlackBerry except the enterprising mail have been resolved.

He added that without enterprise co-operation, which holds one part of the key, decryption is not possible. Ministry of home affairs has expressed reservations over encrypted data
