PC sales touch record 6.34 mn in 06-07

The market was led by high growth in notebook segment at 97% with sale of over 8.5 lakh units while desktops grew by 19%.

NEW DELHI: A significant growth in notebooks segment pushed the total personal computer sales in the country to 6.34 million units in 2006-07 compared to over five million in the previous year.

The personal computer sales - notebooks and desktops - registered a growth rate of 26 per cent this year and is expected to retain this momentum next year with sales likely to hit eight million units, according to data by apex body of IT hardware industry Manufacturers Association for Information Technology.

The market was led by high growth in notebook segment at 97 per cent with sale of over 8.5 lakh units while desktops grew by 19 per cent with sale of 54.90 lakh units in 2006-07.

The total electronics manufacturing industry currently employs 1.5 million people directly, which is expected to increase to seven million by 2015 besides generating employment of 14 million indirectly, MAIT Executive Director Vinnie Mehta told reporters here.

The business segment accounted for 74 per cent of the total PC sales, registering a growth rate of 18 per cent year-on-year.

However, the home PC market remained stagnant at a growth rate of 23 per cent.

The sales to factory locations and Small and Medium Enterprises remained low whereas large enterprises witnessed a growth of 69 per cent.

The implementation of various e-governance projects led to an increase of 126 per cent in government consumption.
