PC market grows 2.5%, says Gartner

The combined desk-based and mobile PC market in India grew to nearly 2.5 million units in the second quarter of 2011.

NEW DELHI: The combined desk-based and mobile PC market in India grew to nearly 2.5 million units in the second quarter of 2011, a 2.5% increase vis-a-vis the same quarter last year, according to research firm Gartner. “This growth was primarily driven by the mobile PC market, which grew 17% year-onyear in Q2, 2011,” Gartner Principal Research Analyst Vishal Tripathi said in a statement. However, economic factors such as rising interest rates and high inflation costs have resulted in slower consumer demand.

“With the recent hike in commodity pricing, such as fuel and food items, the cause of concern continues to exist in the Indian market. However, we expect the market to perform far better in the coming quarter due the festive season, which is considered as auspicious for buying,” Tripathi said. All the major multinational PC vendors, with the exception of HP, experienced double-digit growth in PC shipments in the reporting quarter.

Dell, with a 17% market share, held on to its No. 1 position, while Acer dethroned HP to clinch the No. 2 slot with a 12% share market share due to the strong performance of its commercial business. HP had an 11.2% market share, while Lenovo had a 10.4% share in Q2, 2011. Shipments from Acer, Dell, HP and Lenovo (the top 4 vendors) constituted 50.4% of the market in the second quarter of 2011.
