Now, PC makers target children
PCs with cartoon characters all over them, in lovely colours, designs and sleek casings & PCs with antibacterial keyboards.
That's what computer manufacturers are now increasingly doing designing products targeting children, given that children are fast becoming major decisionmakers in PC purchases.
HP has computers with Noddy skins, in blue, with Noddy and his red car on the outside. Along with this comes the Noddy kit, complete with a bag, eating plate, water-bottle , tiffin box, a cap, compass box and a writing pad, all in Noddy colours and pictures.
Lenovo tied up with Disney Consumer Products to introduce a Power Rangers Mystic Force theme desktop in 2007. Targeted at children, the limited edition desktop featured a vibrant red skin with the superheroes of the Mystic Force series.
"For a family, the PC purchasing decision is driven by the demands and needs of youngsters. Kids using the PC for everyday education and entertainment is a growing segment," says Ramprasad L, V-P for transactional consumer sales in Lenovo India.
Shubhodip Pal, head of consumer marketing in HP India, says that apart from lifestyle computing, people use PCs for educational purposes . "Our Noddy live show was launched with the same strategy, to help in the education of children in an entertaining way," he says.
Sumanta Mukherjee, lead analyst (PC research) in IDC India, says, "Desktops targeted at children usually sport a brightly coloured chassis, keyboard and mouse and/or a joystick." These normally come bundled with learning and entertainment material as CDs/DVDs.
