'Micro Electro and nano-based devices hold huge potential'

BANGALORE: Micro Electro Mechanicals and Nanotechnology based devices that form part of 'smart systems' has seen tremendous growth in research in the last one decade and holds enormous potential in terms of application, according to Dr V K Aatre, former Scientific Advisor.

"The last decade has witnessed significant progress in smart structures and micro electro mechanical systems,"he said on the eve of the three-day international conference on Smart Materials, Sructures and Systems, starting here tomorrow.

Micro electro mechanicals and smart structures have various applications and hold huge potential in sectors like aerospace, aeronautics, automotives and health in particular.

Some of the technology is now being used by organisations like ISRO in launch vehicles and satellites, while NAL is using the technolgogy for its new breed of aircraft.

Micro electro mechanicals could perhaps even overtake nanotechnology in terms of application because right now the technology is in place and all that is required is to finetune it for application.

S Gopalkrishnan, Associate Professor at the Indian Institue of Science, Bangalore, said manpower crunch was one of the biggest issues in this field. An initiative has been taken to draw students in the form of 'VTU planning' to launch an elective course for undergraduate students on micro and smart system, he said.
