NEW DELHI: Chipmaker MediaTek Wednesday opened a new R&D facility at Bengaluru and said that it will invest $200 million in India over the next few years to boost R&D capabilities towards developing affordable solutions for the surging super-mid market.

"MediaTek Bangalore R&D center would cater to the growing needs of millions of consumers in emerging super-mid market, especially in the South-East Asian region,” Grant Kuo, managing director, MediaTek India, said in a statement.

The Bengaluru R&D center will develop solutions for wireless communications and establish MediaTek’s presence in other core segments like connectivity and home entertainment devices.

“By year-end, we plan to build a workforce of over 100 professionals with strong expertise in the IC design industry, and over the next few years, we look to grow to over 500 in number,” Akshay Aggarwal, general manager, MediaTek Bangalore, said.

The Bengaluru center will develop new products and applications to tap growth opportunities in emerging technologies like LTE, he added.

The new center will work in collaboration with other globally located R&D facilities of MediaTek to design solutions that combine hardware, software and services to deliver a seamless cross-platform experience to consumers.
