Intel to introduce car infotainment system

HYDERABAD: Intel Corporation is in talks with Indian car makers to introduce a new `in-vehicle infotainment' (IVI) system in passenger cars.

B Suryanarayanan, Director, Sales (South), Intel South Asia, said the dual display system of the IVI will have two screens on the dashboard; for driver and the passengers.

"I cannot tell when the system will be available in India. We are talking to various automobile companies," Suryanarayanan told reporters here.

While the car driver will have the access to the screen for navigational or driving information, passengers can download movies, songs, etc separately.

Intel had already tied up with Kia Motors Corporation's K9 luxury sedan to introduce IVI. The touch screen on the dashboard interfaces with the driver information system (DIS) navigation. This allows the driver to take advantage of state-of-the-art functions and services such as voice recognition, smartphone remote start, stolen vehicle location tracking as well as access to the Internet, Intel had said.

Replying to a query, Suryanarayanan said the chip-maker is currently working on Atom chip which would consume less power and space for Automatic Teller Machines.

"We are in discussions with device makers. Testing has to be completed. The ATM has to withstand extreme temperatures in rural areas also," he explained.
