India, UK make a neat fit in hardware design, applications
The semiconductor industries in India and the UK are ideally positioned to collaborate to boost India's IP creation and build next-generation products. Thinnest Laptop
Indian companies specialise in VLSI, hardware/board-level design and embedded systems in wireless communication, computing and networking, but few are capable of complete product development. On the other hand, UKs strength lies in IP creation and complete product development, making for an ideal fit with Indian talents.

Semiconductor-driven activities in India and the UK are primarily in the area of design. Communications, IT and consumer electronics are the major application areas in India, accounting for 85% of the demand. Industrial, telecommunications, transport and consumer electronics form the major applications in the UK, accounting for half of the demand, it points out.
The findings of the study will be followed up by a conference, SemiConclave 2008, on September 15 and 16 in Bangalore to promote trade and research links between the two countries. UK universities score high on semiconductor research as many as 27 universities focus on research, with the top 10 having in-house fabrication units and incubation centres.
In India, the focus is more on chip design and testing. Indian design houses include the captive arms of global semiconductor companies as well as third-party service providers. The UK industry leads in digital and analog design.
Until recently, semiconductor design activities in India were clustered in Bangalore, Hyderabad, Delhi/NCR and Chennai. Design companies are now setting up operations in Pune and Ahmedabad. These clusters have developed due to the availability of skilled designers and proximity to quality educational infrastructure.
Bangalore has around 85 design firms with over 30 captive offshore design centres.
