IBM tops India's non-x86 UNIX server mkt in Q1 2011
Technology giant IBM today said it has maintained its numero uno position in the Indian non-x86 UNIX server market, driven by strong demand for its products.

NEW DELHI: Technology giant IBM today said it has maintained its numero uno position in the Indian non-x86 UNIX server market, driven by strong demand for its products.
A server is designed for various functions like serving e-mail, protecting internal networks and hosting web sites.
"According to IDC's Asia/Pacific Quarterly Enterprise Server Tracker, IBM has emerged No 1 in the India non-x86 UNIX server market in revenue terms in the first quarter (Q1) of 2011," IBM India/South Asia Country Manager (Power Systems, Systems and Technology Group) Viswanath Ramaswamy told PTI.
He attributed the success in the segment to strong uptake of its products, including its latest launch Power7 servers.
"IBM's revenue growth in the non-x86 Unix server segment in India was driven by strong performance in the financial services, communication and manufacturing verticals," Ramaswamy said.
According to the IDC, IBM maintained its leadership capturing 42.1 per cent revenue market share in Q1 2011, which is 11.7 points lead over its nearest competitor.
IBM has been at the top position for the last five years in non-x86 UNIX server market in India (from calendar year 2006 to 2010).
Analyst reports peg the overall India server market at over USD 800 million in FY2011, of which the non-x86 UNIX server market is expected to be worth over USD 250 million.
IBM had a 28.1 per cent revenue market share of the overall server market in India in Q1 2011, with year-on-year growth of six per cent.
The overall server market in India during the same period grew by 9.3 per cent in revenue terms.
IBM bagged clients like Canara Bank, Titan, Gulf Oil, Cosmos Bank and Caparo last year.
