IBM to make computers to power games, sites
International Business Machines (IBM) plans to create computers powerful enough to run Web sites and online games while millions of people use them at once.
Hoplon Infotainment provided software for the project, IBM said. The two will install chips used in Sony's PlayStation consoles in larger mainframe computers from IBM, the world's biggest computer-services company.
The computers, which businesses use to process transactions at a rate of more than 9,000 a second, will cut down on users' real-time delays as they play or download video on the Web, IBM said.
The company aims to capitalise on the rising popularity of online games such as "World of Warcraft," which has more than 8.5 million players.
