HCL announces eco-friendly laptops

Greenpeace alleged HCL's laptops had a number of highly toxic substances like lead, bromide PVC and phthalates that are hazardous to health and environment.

NEW DELHI: HCL Infoystems on Tuesday announced launching eco-efficient Notebook PCs in the country, hours after international environmental NGO Greenpeace alleged its laptops were not environment-friendly.
The company said in a statement it has introduced eco-efficient consumer and business notebooks that are compliant with the RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) directive and are completely safe for users and environment.
Earlier today, Greenpeace alleged HCL's laptops had a number of highly toxic substances like lead, bromide PVC and phthalates that are hazardous to health and environment.
However, HCL Infosystems Executive Vice President George Paul said: "HCL, as a socially responsible corporate citizen, has a comprehensive programme to ensure protection of environment, health and safety of all its stakeholders and recognizes the need to minimize the hazardous impact of e-wastes of its products on the environment."
"As part of this programme, we had initiated voluntary compliance to RoHS directives for all our products," he said.
HCL was the first computer manufacturing company to have both its plants ISO 14001 certified and implement a comprehensive e-waste disposal policy, the statement said.
Earlier this year, HCL was the first IT company to set-up a comprehensive process that enables its customers to dispose off electronic waste in an environment-friendly manner, the company claimed.
