Global shipments of servers grows 1.5% in Q1 of 2012; revenue declined 1.8 %: Gartner

Global shipments of servers grew 1.5 percent in the first quarter of 2012, while server revenue declined 1.8 percent year over year.

Global shipments of servers grew 1.5 percent in the first quarter of 2012, while server revenue declined 1.8 percent year over year, technology market researcher Gartner Inc. said on Thursday.

Server revenues during the past one year fell from $12.6 billion in 2011 to $12.4 billion this year.

In terms of revenue, Asia/Pacific, Middle East , Africa, and Western Europe posted declines. According to Gartner, the results are not surprising considering the current variations in regional economic conditions.

IBM topped the worldwide server market with a 28.1 % market share during the first quarter. Troubled PC maker HP's came second with 27.8 % market share.

Eastern Europe reported the highest growth in shipments with a 16.0 percent increase, while Japan posted the highest vendor revenue growth at 10.6 percent for the period.
