ET Review: Canon EOS 1200D

NEW DELHI: The 1200D is Canon’s new entry level DSLR that improves upon the 1100D in a number of ways. The CMOS sensor has been upgraded to 18MP (similar to the one on the 600/650D), the LCD is now a full 3-inches with a higher resolution and it does full HD video recording. Other major specifications like the Digic 4 processor, ISO up to 6400 and a 9-point AF system are unchanged. It would have been great if Canon had added WiFi connectivity also.

Compared to the earlier entry level 1100D, the 1200D stands out in terms of build quality. It also has a better grip and a nicer textured finish that makes it feel more like a mid-range DSLR. Overall, it feels a lot like the EOS 550D in terms of handling and ergonomics. While the button layout is slightly changed from the 1100D, Canon users will feel right at home.

In terms of performance, the camera delivers fantastic images with balanced colours and sharp details. Even indoors, there was minimal noise visible at ISO 1600. The built in creative filters help new users shoot with effects such as toy camera and fish eye.

There is also a Canon companion app for iOS and Android — it's a great way for new users to familiarise themselves with the camera controls and shooting modes. Even though this is the first entry level DSLR from canon with full HD video recording, the video and audio quality is superb.

There are a couple of issues with the 1200D. First, it does not have a built-in sensor cleaning system and we believe that most new users will be wary of cleaning the sensor manually. Also, the 9-point AF system seems dated now, especially when compared to competition in the same price range.

For the price, the 1200D is great value for money. If you can extend your budget a bit, you can also go for Canon's 600D. It adds an articulating display that is useful to get shots from different angles, faster continuous shooting speed (4ps on 600D vs 3fps on the 1200D) and overall better build quality.
