SAN FRANCISCO: Dell on Thursday reported that its second-quarter profit climbed to $545 million on surging demand for computer hardware.

The Texas-based computer company earned 28 cents per share in the quarter that ended July 30, a jump of nearly 16 percent from the same period a year earlier.

Dell reported that revenue surged 22 percent to $15.5 billion in the quarter due to heightened appetite for all of its products and services.

"We continue to strengthen our portfolio of data center solutions at an aggressive pace with the addition of key IP, talent and technology," Dell chief executive Michael Dell said in a release.

"This quarter's results are a strong reflection of the progress we've made."
