Asus mulls manufacturing in India; aims to increase market share to 5%
NEW DELHI: Following the footsteps of global competitors like Xiaomi and Motorola, smartphone maker Asus is mulling manufacturing in India and has set up an internal team to study the prospects of domestic manufacturing.

The Taiwanese firm, which currently has a share of about two per cent in the Indian smartphone market, aims to expand it to five per cent by next year.

"India offers a huge opportunity, smartphone penetration is just about 10 per cent. We are focusing on getting the entire supply chain right here and not just assembly. Once the supply chain is there, manufacturing will become easier here," Asus chairman Jonney Shih told.

The firm is keen on manufacturing in India, he added.

"We have set up an internal team to look into this. Before the end of the year, we should have something to announce," Asus India Regional Head (South Asia and Country Manager) Peter Chang said.

He added that the company is in discussions with its manufacturing partners for the project.

Asus is among the growing list of global smartphone makers, including Xiaomi, Motorola and Gionee, that are considering manufacturing in India, where the government is pushing its 'Make in India' initiative.

India is one the fastest growing smartphone markets globally.

According to research firm CMR, 19.5 million smartphones were shipped in India in the March 2015 quarter.

"India is growing really strong for us. This market provides a lot of inspiration and gives us inputs for development of new products... We are looking at getting into the top four position in the next one year from the last quarter of this year (October-December)," Shih said.

He added: "If that happens, India will contribute 10-15 per cent of our global revenues."

The company today launched a slew of handsets under its Zenfone 2 series, priced between Rs 9,999 and Rs 22,999. It also launched three versions of its tablet, ZenPad.

It’s also the first smartphone to come with 4GB of RAM.

Why would you need 4GB RAM? Well for starters, Android works better when you have enough free RAM available. Apps work smoother, animations do not have to be turned off and switching between running apps is instant. We ran NOVA 3 and Real Racing 3 side by side and switched between them instantly without any lag — very impressive for an Android phone at this price. Another reason for the Zenfone 2 to have 4GB RAM is the multi-user account feature.

Each user account will have individual apps, settings & files which needs more RAM.

Other specifications are equally impressive.

You get the 2.3Ghz quad core Intel Atom processor, up to 128GB internal storage (our unit was the 32GB variant) and a 3,000mAh battery.

In our usage, there was no problem running any game or app or switching between them instantly.

Battery life is also superb — a full charge regularly lasts a day and half with constant 3G/WiFi connectivity.

Asus seems to have played up the design on the Zenfone 2.

It carries forward the signature concentric circle pattern under the display (like the Zenfone 5). While the back panel is plastic, the metallic finish gives it a premium look and feel. One big design change Asus has done with the Zenfone 2 is the placement of volume keys on the rear — similar to LG G2, G3.

While this makes the phone easily usable by a right or left handed person, it takes some getting used to.

A major flaw is the placement of the power button on top — with large phones, the power button should be on the side for easy one handed usage.

The 5.5-inch screen has a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels and shows crisp details with rich colors.

Viewing angles are great and there is Corning Gorilla Glass 3 for protection — we still managed to scratch the screen, so you will need a screen protector.

We also liked that the phone comes preloaded with a reading mode as well as the option to adjust the colour temperature of the display.

In terms of the camera, the Zenfone 2 is impressive.

Both the rear 13MP and front 5MP camera take pictures with minimal noise, good details and rich colours.

However, shotto-shot times are slow. There is almost a 2-second delay between capturing an image and the next shot. We hope Asus fixes this with a software update.

You get multiple modes to shoot including a handy manual mode, a great built-in photo editor and beautification mode for selfies — enhancing the overall camera experience for any user.

The only thing we felt was lacking was 4k video recording.

Price: Rs 19,999

Rating: ****1/2

Specifications: 5.5-inch full HD IPS display, 2.3Ghz quad core Intel Atom processor, 4GB RAM, 32GB storage, microSD slot, 4G, WiFi, WiFi Direct, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, MHL, dual SIM, 13MP rear + 5MP front camera, Android 5.0, 3,000mAh battery, 170g.

Pros: Great build quality, gorgeous display, top-notch performance, good battery life, Asus UI is loaded with nifty features

Cons: Bulky, menu buttons not backlit, no 4K video recording, placement of power button

As a successor, the Zenfone 2 is an ideal upgrade: bigger screen, better hardware and improved battery life.

However, for the price, it faces stiff competition from the OnePlus One that offers similar performance, a slightly better camera and an equally great design.
