SAN FRANCISCO: Apple Computer is to recall some 1.8 million computer laptop batteries because the Sony-manufactured power packs could overheat and burst into flames, the company said Thursday.

The recall came just a week after Dell Computer recalled 4.1 million Sony-made lithium-ion batteries.

Some 1.1 million of the lithium-ion batteries to be recalled by Apple were sold in the US, with the remainder going to international customers. The batteries were sold with Apple iBook G4 and PowerBook G4 computers since Oct 2003, though none of Apple's most recent notebooks using microprocessors from Intel were affected, the company said.

Apple launched a webpage, support.apple.com/batteryprogram, to provide details for customers seeking to exchange batteries. So far none of the affected batteries have actually burst into flame, in contrast to the batteries involved in the Dell recall.
