Apple App Store logs 1.5 billion downloads in first year
Apple on Tuesday crowned its App Store the largest in the world, saying that the online shop served-up 1.5 billion applications for iPhones and iPod Touch devices in its first year.

SAN FRANCISCO: Apple on Tuesday crowned its App Store the largest in the world, saying that the online shop served-up 1.5 billion applications for iPhones and iPod Touch devices in its first year.
Launched in July of 2008 as part of an operating system update for iPhones and iPod Touch MP3 players, the App Store is growing "at an incredible pace," according to Apple.
The App Store boasts having more than 65,000 applications on virtual shelves accessible in 77 countries.
"The App Store is like nothing the industry has ever seen before in both scale and quality," Apple chief executive Steve Jobs said in a release.
"With 1.5 billion apps downloaded, it is going to be very hard for others to catch up."
Rival smart phone makers have rolled out rival versions of the App Store to sell mini-applications for devices competing with iPhones, which have become marketplace superstars since debuting in the United States in 2007.
