WASHINGTON: A new portable device that translates your finger movements into readable type can bring keyboard free typing closer.

AirType is a set of cuff-like devices that attach to your hands, and makes the letters you want by learning your finger movements.

It is no different than typing on a keyboard but it allows you to type on any surface, its makers in Texas said.

They describe AirType as "a keyboard that fits in the palm of your hand".

It adapts to the way a user types, so they don't need to change their typing habits.

The device is designed to be just as portable as a cell phone and can clip onto a tablet for easy transport.

It is accompanied by an app that brings dynamic text prediction and correction to the user's typing experience.

The device is still in an early prototype stage.
