Hair extension startup Hair Originals has raised $5 million in a Series A funding round co-led by Anicut Growth Fund and 12 Flags Consumer Holdings, with participation from Lenskart cofounder Peyush Bansal.

This brings the company's total funding to $7.2 million to date, Hair Originals said in a statement on Monday.

The startup plans to use the fresh capital to expand its ‘try-at-home’ service, bringing on-demand hair extension services to 40 cities. It also aims to launch around 30 company-owned experience centres over the next 12 months and strengthen its research and development (R&D) capabilities.

Founded by IIT graduate Jitendra Sharma and Piyush Wadhwani, Hair Originals offers natural hair extensions and has in-house manufacturing capabilities. The company said it launches four to five new products every month.

It has partnered with over 1,400 salons and claims to have tripled its business year-on-year (YoY).

As part of its expansion, it has opened stores at Hyderabad and Coimbatore airports in collaboration with salon chain Naturals. To grow its global presence, it has also partnered with Kurves salon chain in North America to establish experience centres.

The company previously raised $1.5 million in seed funding from Anicut Capital and other investors, according to data intelligence platform Tracxn.

“India has been the global leader in the export of human hair. While India exports more than 85 percent of raw human hair, China captures the majority of the value-added market by selling to global markets in the form of hair extensions and wigs. Hair Originals is capturing value in India by building an omni-channel brand of premium hair extension products through the supply chain and manufacturing focus,” said Dhruv Kapoor, partner at Anicut Capital.
