Collins Aerospace invests $25 million for testing lab in Bengaluru

The investment in the 50,000 sq ft facility by the US-headquartered aeronautical and defense equipment maker is part of its plan to grow India into a global hub for aerospace innovation.

Aeronautical and defence equipment maker Collins Aerospace, an RTX group company, has invested $25 million for a new engineering development and test centre in Bengaluru, its largest facility outside the US.

“The 50,000 sq ft lab facility streamlines product development, testing, and certification of components locally … It is also a fresh investment beyond the $200 million we have committed over the last 4-5 years,” said Savyasachi Srinivas, vice president of global engineering & technology centres at Collins Aerospace.

The US-based company also has a 30,000-sq-ft electronics lab dedicated to testing. “In all there would be four labs, including in Hyderabad and Bengaluru, which also houses two factories,” Srinivas told ET.

Collins Aerospace, which established its engineering footprint in India in 2017, said the new facility includes comprehensive testing equipment to ensure aerospace systems meet the highest global safety and performance standards. These tests simulate harsh aircraft operating conditions and address potential issues including extreme temperatures, high altitudes, vibration, and electromagnetic interference.

“By conducting these tests locally, Collins can more quickly identify adjustments earlier in the development process, improving product design while reducing both time and cost,” the company said in a news release.

In the future, the facility will also expand to serve all RTX businesses, supporting a broader range of aerospace and defence applications and allowing for shared innovation across the company's product portfolio, it said.

RTX operates three companies under it — Collins Aerospace, Pratt & Whitney and Raytheon — and posted cumulative sales of more than $80 billion in 2024.

The new Collins Aerospace facility is among the global capability centres being set up in India by multinationals to leverage the country’s engineering talent.

Of the over 7,000 employees working in India for the RTX group, 6,000 are employed with Collins Aerospace.

The company aims to increase its headcount here by 1,500 over the next three-five years.

Srinivas stated it is partnering and expanding work with several Indian firms as well as the government for the ‘Make in India’ initiatives, working with the Indian Air Force and India's advanced medium combat aircraft project.

He said India needs to further push its R&D focus beyond pure engineering work.
