WhatsApp launches in-app AI feature ‘Writing Help’ to help users refine messages

In a post on X, WhatsApp explained that the new feature makes use of Meta’s Private Processing technology. This means users can get AI-generated suggestions without Meta or WhatsApp seeing the original messages or the rewrites. So privacy is still protected, even when using the tool.
To try it out, users can simply tap the new pencil icon in the app while composing a message in a personal or group chat.
“You can review the suggestions from AI in various styles such as professional, funny, or supportive that you can select or continue editing to deliver that perfect message,” the company said in a blog post.
With this update, WhatsApp users won’t need to rely on third-party apps such as ChatGPT or Gemini to fine-tune their messages.
Meta also emphasised that tools such as Writing Help and Message Summaries are optional and turned off by default, giving users full control over their WhatsApp experience. The Message Summaries feature was introduced for users in the United States in late June. Powered by MetaAI, it provides a quick summary of unread messages in private chats, helping users catch up faster without reading every message in full. To maintain privacy, no one else in the chat is notified when the feature is used.
The latest update comes just days after WhatsApp rolled out new tools for group calls, allowing users to schedule calls in advance and send invitations ahead of time. The update also introduced new in-call reactions, including the ‘raise hand’ option, to make group conversations more interactive and engaging.
