Thapar Institute of Engineering & Technology (TIET) Friday said it has tied up with Nvidia, one of the world’s biggest producers of graphics processing units, to set up a school of advanced AI and data science.

Nvidia will help train the faculty of Thapar School of Advanced AI & Data Science and advise on curriculum changes. It will also provide its platforms for accelerated computing, give access to research and through its inception programme help nurture qualifying AI startups incubated at TIET.

Nvidia will provide technical support to the school from the Nvidia AI University programme.

TIET will also launch a Bachelor of Technology in artificial intelligence and machine learning from this year.

“We have already received AICTE approval for the same. This year, we are looking at starting with a batch size of 120 students,” said Padmakumar Nair, director of Thapar Institute of Engineering & Technology. "This also establishes our vision of providing education that creates future-ready students."

TIET is also launching a master’s programme in AI, machine learning and data science.

“As a key player in the global AI education initiative, Thapar Institute will integrate cutting-edge Nvidia technologies to cultivate a new generation of AI experts across India,” said Vishal Dhupar, managing director of Asia South at Nvidia.

TIET will set up state-of-the-art AI infrastructure using Nvidia DGX systems with Nvidia H100 Tensor Core GPUs, Nvidia A100 Tensor Core GPUs and Nvidia AI enterprise software platform for the development and deployment of generative AI, Nair said.

TIET plans to gear up by the first semester of 2024-25 academic year with the new infrastructure to support undergraduate AI degree programme, AI mandatory/elective courses across all disciplines, technical training for faculty and staff, research collaborations, and establishment of an AI startup ecosystem powered by Nvidia edge computing.

“Our plan is to ensure every TIET who is graduating to be ‘AI literate’ by making required curriculum changes and additional requirements,” said Rajeev R Vederah, chairman, board of governors at TIET.
