The Sam Altman-led firm confirmed a technical glitch in the AI app which was affecting its performance.
“Most of ChatGPT, the API, and Sora have been down for a couple of hours and we're sorry for the trouble this is causing,” OpenAI said in a post on X.
According to Downdetector, more than 1,500 users in the US experienced glitches, leaving them frustrated and unable to use the app.
This is the second time this month that the company has reported an outage, the first of which affected users globally and lasted for about six hours. During the last outage, it caused widespread disruption, with many firms that rely on OpenAI's API for their projects also affected.
Last month, when ChatGPT was down for around 30 minutes, Altman claimed on X that it is the eighth biggest website in the world and posted, "We are much, much better at reliability than we used to be, but clearly more work in front of us."
ChatGPT and related apps reported a sudden breakdown in September too, mostly affecting users in the US.
Users have been reacting to the outage, replying to the post by OpenAI on X. One particular user commented, “This is starting to happen more often.”
Another person said, “No worries! I switched to Grok long ago so this didn’t affect me.”
Some users took the outage on a lighter note. One user posted, “AI takeover postponed. Looks like we’re safe.”
Another person joked “I had to go sit with my family, I hope you’re happy.”
