Amid the DeepSeek frenzy, OpenAI launched ChatGPT Gov on Tuesday, designed specifically for the US government’s use. This new platform is “designed to streamline government agencies’ access to OpenAI’s frontier models.”

OpenAI, in a blog post, said, “By making our products available to the US government, we aim to ensure AI serves the national interest and the public good, aligned with democratic values while empowering policymakers to responsibly integrate these capabilities to deliver better services to the American people.”

The Microsoft-backed company claims that it offers enhanced security, allowing agencies to input “non-public, sensitive information” while operating within secure hosting environments, as per a report by CNBC.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, while commenting on DeepSeek's R1 model in an X post, had said that the company will “pull up some releases”.

How to use

Agencies can use ChatGPT Gov on their own Microsoft Azure cloud or Azure Government cloud, built on Microsoft’s Azure OpenAI Service. Self-hosting ChatGPT Gov allows agencies to better control their security, privacy, and compliance needs, including strict cybersecurity standards.

The blog also emphasised that the use of ChatGPT Gov is subject to the company’s usage policies, like other OpenAI services.

According to CNBC, ChatGPT Enterprise, which powers ChatGPT Gov, is undergoing the Federal Risk and Authorisation Management Program (FedRAMP) but hasn't been approved for use with non-public data yet. Kevin Weil, OpenAI’s chief product officer, mentioned that it's a "long process" and couldn't provide a timeline.

OpenAI recently made headlines due to a copyright lawsuit filed by Indian book publishers and their international counterparts in New Delhi. This is the latest in a series of global suits aiming to prevent the ChatGPT chatbot from accessing proprietary content.
