OpenAI said it will offer its products and services to US government agencies “at essentially no cost”, days after the Trump administration announced its AI Action Plan.

Founder Sam Altman posted on X that OpenAI for Government will collaborate with US General Services Administration (GSA) to lend its products and services to the entire federal executive branch workforce.

The collaboration, sealed for a year, allows participating US federal agencies to utilise OpenAI frontier models through ChatGPT Enterprise, at the cost of $1 per agency.

In a blog, the company emphasised that the move is in line with the Trump Administration’s AI Action Plan and to curb red tape.

OpenAI claimed that Commonwealth of Pennsylvania employees using ChatGPT saved an average of about 95 minutes per day on routine tasks. In North Carolina, 85% of participants in a separate 12-week pilot with the Department of State Treasurer reported a positive experience with ChatGPT.

Anthropic’s Claude is also listed on the GSA schedule on Tuesday, making its products readily accessible to US federal government departments and agencies with pre-negotiated pricing and terms that comply with federal acquisition regulations.

This comes a day after the US government added OpenAI, Alphabet's Google and Anthropic to a list of approved artificial intelligence vendors, according to a Bloomberg report.

The Pentagon has already awarded civilian AI contracts to OpenAI and Elon Musk’s xAI, which are separate from the GSA’s announcements on Tuesday to encourage AI use across federal agencies. Treasury Department and Office of Personnel Management have already expressed interest in using the new platform, according to GSA officials.
