OpenAI CEO Sam Altman issues 'ring of power' warning on AGI

Sam Altman said the race to develop artificial general intelligence (AGI) is driving intense competition and conflict among AI companies in a bid to seize control.

“Once you see AGI, you can’t unsee it. It has a real ‘ring of power’ dynamic to it and makes people do crazy things. I don’t mean that AGI is the ring itself, but rather the totalizing philosophy of being the one to control AGI.”

Altman added that AGI carries significant societal risks and must not be controlled by a small group of companies.


The central issue, he said, is not AGI itself but the concentration of power tied to it. “The only solution… is to share the technology broadly, and for no one to have the ring,” he said.

He said public institutions must remain more powerful than private companies in determining how AI evolves. While laws and norms will need to adapt, he said the process must remain within democratic systems, even if slower and more complex.

“Laws and norms are going to change, but we have to work within the democratic process, even though it will be messy and slower than we’d like. We want to be a voice and a stakeholder, but not to have all the power.”

The remarks came after an incident earlier on Friday in which a Molotov cocktail was thrown at Altman’s home and threats were made outside the company’s headquarters.

Sharing a personal family photograph, Altman outlined his concerns about AI, linking them to growing public anxiety and industry tensions.
