Last week, OpenAI’s ChatGPT became the fastest application to reach 1 billion global monthly active users, within three years of its launch as of May 2026, according to data from SensorTower. By comparison, Google Maps, Google Chrome, YouTube and Instagram took 5-8 years to reach the same mark, the data showed.
However, OpenAI, which is reportedly eyeing a US market listing, is also facing challenges as competition intensifies. A report from fintech firm Ramp’s AI Index revealed that Anthropic has surpassed OpenAI in business adoption.
