Elon Musk open-sources Grok 2, bets on xAI to outpace Google
Elon Musk's AI startup, xAI, has made Grok 2 open source. Grok 3 will also be open source soon. Musk believes xAI will surpass Google. Chinese companies are expected to be strong competitors. Grok is collaborating with the US government. The Depar...

Musk shared plans earlier this month to open-source Grok 2 on the microblogging site X. The repository contains the weights of Grok 2, a model trained and used at xAI in 2024, licensed under the Grok 2 Community License Agreement.
In another X post, Musk claimed that xAI would be competent to Google, and eventually succeed over the global tech giant. After that Chinese companies will be xAI’s “toughest” competitor due to their hardware and energy capabilities.
“xAI will soon be far beyond any company besides Google, then significantly exceed Google. Companies in China will be the toughest competitors, because they have so much more electricity than America and are super strong at building hardware,” he said.
Grok expansion
In July, Elon Musk’s AI chatbot, Grok, officially collaborated with the US government under its new initiative called “Grok for Government,” confirming that the Department of Defense (DOD) will begin using the controversial AI model.
The firm revealed that Grok's new $200 million maximum contract with the DOD will allow the latest iteration of the AI model, Grok 4, to assist in making government services faster and more efficient, and address national security and scientific challenges.
Additionally, Musk said Grok AI will be available in Tesla vehicles, but did not share a timeline for the integration.
