Meta is cutting roughly 600 positions within its superintelligence lab, according to a report by Axios on Wednesday.

The report, citing an internal memo, stated that the move is aimed at more agile operations at the company.

US employees will learn by 7 am Pacific time whether their jobs are affected, the memo read.

Meta chief AI officer Alexandr Wang said the workforce reduction would eliminate overly bureaucratic functions within the organisation, allowing each employee to have “more scope and impact.”

The announced job cuts will impact several of Meta’s AI-focused units, according to the report, including:

  • FAIR (Facebook AI Research) team, which develops foundational AI technologies.
  • Product-related AI teams that integrate AI into Meta’s apps.
  • AI infrastructure units, responsible for building the systems that support these capabilities.

Meanwhile, Meta’s newly established TBD lab, focused on cutting-edge AI research and experimental technologies, continues to expand by hiring for new roles.

Describing the affected employees as “a talented group of individuals,” Wang emphasised that the tech giant would continue to need their skills.

Employees affected by the current job cuts were encouraged to apply for other roles within Meta.
