The adoption of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) will serve as the next major job creator for India while increasing productivity, Tata Sons chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran said on Friday.

"Contrary to all the apprehensions, I firmly believe GenAI adoption wholeheartedly will serve as the next job creator for India. Let's acknowledge the reality... In most situations, GenAI will assist a low-skilled person to perform at a different level of productivity. It will enhance the productivity very significantly," he said at the Mumbai Tech Week.

Chandrasekaran noted that traditional business advantages are becoming less relevant, and India must focus on building AI capabilities rather than merely consuming such technologies.

Further, he stressed the importance of developing sovereign AI capabilities, warning that without them, India risks having its activities, languages, and cultures processed by AI systems that do not fully understand the country.

Countries that will lead in the AI race will not only export the technology but will also be leaders in the way the world thinks in the future, he said.

Discussing Tata Group’s AI strategy, Chandrasekaran said the conglomerate is investing in various areas, including AI agents, robots, infrastructure, virtual workers, and talent development.

He had earlier noted that the group is currently executing over 100 GenAI projects and has committed to creating 500,000 manufacturing jobs over the next five years.

"We have a unique opportunity to create another very powerful sector similar to the scale of the Indian IT services sector, just on AI. That is the potential," he said.
