“You’re not talking to somebody who woke up a loser,” a peeved Jensen Huang, the chief of AI superchip-maker Nvidia said while defending Nvidia’s right to sell chips in China. An unusually aggressive tone from mild-mannered Huang was probably triggered by Nvidia’s wobbling chip crown both near and abroad.

The AI chip market has suddenly shifted from a near monopoly to a fragmented landscape. Hyperscalers and AI labs including Amazon, Anthropic and Google are increasingly relying on in-house custom chips to train and run large models.
