Microsoft explores OpenAI alternatives

Microsoft is developing its own AI models and may offer them to developers, according to The Information. The company is also testing AI models from xAI, Meta and DeepSeek to see if they can replace OpenAI’s technology in Copilot.

Reuters reported in December that Microsoft has been adding both internal and third-party AI models to Microsoft 365 Copilot. This is part of a strategy to rely less on OpenAI and reduce costs.

Microsoft’s GitHub unit has already introduced models from Anthropic and Google as alternatives to OpenAI’s GPT-4o for coding assistance, following a broader trend within the company to expand its AI options.

Musk’s lawsuit against OpenAI

The Tesla chief, an early backer of OpenAI, is suing the company. He claims that OpenAI’s shift to a for-profit model goes against its original mission of serving the public good. Last year, he added Microsoft to the lawsuit, arguing that the tech giant is influencing OpenAI’s direction.

A judge recently rejected Musk’s request to immediately block OpenAI from operating as a for-profit company. However, the court may fast-track the case to address Musk’s claims sooner.
