OpenAI announced a major update to ChatGPT, introducing apps that can run directly inside the chatbot. The development comes as ChatGPT’s user base has grown to over 800 million weekly users, up from 100 million in 2023.

The number of developers using OpenAI’s tools has also doubled to 4 million, and API usage has increased from 300 million tokens per minute to 6 billion, CEO Sam Altman revealed at the OpenAI DevDay address in San Francisco.

The new ChatGPT Apps SDK, now in preview for developers, lets them build apps that connect to data, trigger actions, and include interactive interfaces.

SDK is the toolkit developers use to build and test apps inside ChatGPT.

The system is built on the Model Context Protocol (MCP), which supports agent-like behavior inside ChatGPT.

Starting Monday, apps including Booking.com, Canva, Coursera, Expedia, Figma, Spotify, and Zillow are available inside ChatGPT. More apps will roll out in the coming weeks, Altman mentioned in his keynote address.

Developers can begin building with the SDK starting Monday, he said. Later this year, OpenAI will also allow app submissions by developers for review and add a public app directory for users.

Meanwhile, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) announced a landmark multi-billion-dollar agreement with OpenAI.

According to a joint statement, AMD will provide OpenAI with the latest version of its high performance graphics chips expected to debut next year. AMD also issued a warrant that allows OpenAI to buy up to 160 million shares of AMD’s common stock, which amounts to about 10% of the company.

The partnership sent AMD shares rallying over 25% in early trading.

OpenAI is now valued at $500 billion, after current and former employees sold roughly $6.6 billion worth of its shares, per a report by Reuters.

The company had authorised sales of $10-billion-plus worth of stock on the secondary market, the report added. The share sale adds to SoftBank's earlier investment in OpenAI's $40 billion primary funding round.
