OpenAI’s ChatGPT has crossed 900 million weekly active users and 50 million paying subscribers, marking one of the fastest adoption curves in consumer technology.

Posting on X, Nick Turley, VP & head of ChatGPT, said, “ChatGPT just crossed 900M weekly users and 50M paying subscribers. The part I love most is seeing how differently people use it.”

He added, “For a lot of people, ChatGPT is where they start with AI — writing, building, doing research, planning trips, shopping, or getting tasks done. As more people use ChatGPT, we learn faster too. That shows up in the product: quicker responses, better reliability, and answers that feel more natural.”

In a separate blog post, OpenAI said subscriber momentum has accelerated at the start of the year, with January and February on track to become the largest months for new subscriber additions in the company’s history.

The growth comes alongside one of the largest private fundraising rounds globally. OpenAI raised $110 billion at a pre-money valuation of $730 billion. The round was led by Amazon, with participation from Nvidia and SoftBank. Amazon committed $50 billion in total, while SoftBank and Nvidia invested $30 billion each.

OpenAI CEO on India

India has emerged as a key growth market. During his visit for the India AI Impact Summit, chief executive Sam Altman said the country now accounts for around 100 million weekly active ChatGPT users.

He described India as OpenAI’s second-largest market after the United States. The 100 million figure includes both free and paid users, with strong adoption among students, developers, small businesses and enterprises.

Meanwhile, Microsoft and OpenAI sought to reassure that the fresh backing from Amazon, Nvidia and SoftBank does not alter their existing alliance. In a joint blog post, the companies said their partnership remains unchanged, as outlined in their October 2025 update.
