Anthropic has begun testing a new browser-based artificial intelligence (AI) assistant called Claude for Chrome, the company announced on Tuesday. This early version is being rolled out to 1,000 users on its Max plan, which costs between $100 and $200 per month.

The company has also invited interested users to join a waiting list to try out the tool.

The Claude for Chrome works via a browser extension, allowing users to chat with the Claude AI assistant in a side panel that keeps track of what’s happening in the browser. Users can also permit Claude to take certain actions on their behalf within the browser.

However, Anthropic has advised users to be cautious about sharing sensitive data. The company recommends not using Claude for Chrome on websites involving "financial, legal, medical, or other types of sensitive information."

To support privacy, users can limit which sites Claude has access to through the app's settings. By default, Claude is blocked from visiting sites related to financial services, adult content, or pirated material. It will also ask for permission before taking “high-risk actions like publishing, purchasing, or sharing personal data.”

Anthropic said this research preview aims to help identify and address new safety concerns. The company claims it has already reduced the success rate of prompt injection attacks from 23.6% to 11.2% by introducing a set of safeguards.

The browser space is rapidly becoming a new focus area for AI companies. Perplexity recently launched Comet, an AI-enabled browser that can perform tasks for users. OpenAI is also reportedly close to releasing its own AI-powered browser, while Google has added its Gemini assistant to Chrome.

In addition, amid Google’s looming antitrust case, Perplexity has reportedly made an unsolicited $34.5 billion bid for Chrome. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, too, has hinted that his company may be interested in acquiring it.
