Anthropic on Saturday announced that its powerful model Claude Fable 5 will become a standard, permanent part of its highest-tier subscriptions starting July 20. This comes after nearly three weeks of moving deadlines that had left paying users unsure how long free access to the model would last.

Under the new terms, Max and Team Premium subscribers will get Fable 5 built into their plans indefinitely, capped at 50% of their regular usage limits. Pro and Team Standard subscribers will not get the model included in their base plans, but will keep access through usage credits. The company is adding to that with a one-time $100 credit for affected users.

"Demand for Fable has been challenging to predict, which is why we rolled it out to subscription plans in stages, extending access several times as we secured additional capacity," the company wrote.

A rocky rollout

Fable 5's path to general availability has been challenging. The model, which first launched on June 9 alongside Claude Mythos 5, went dark only three days later when the US Department of Commerce imposed export controls on the technology. The government lifted those controls on June 30, and Anthropic restored the model on July 1.

To make up for the lost time as competitor models started launching, Anthropic included Fable 5 in Pro, Max, Team, and premium Enterprise plans for free, but only up to 50% of weekly usage limits, and only through July 7. The Claude maker extended that duration twice, first to July 12, then to July 19.

In its post, Anthropic acknowledged the back-and-forth had frustrated subscribers. "We know this has been frustrating, and we want to give you more certainty about what your plan includes. We are making access standard at 50% usage for the plans that use Fable most intensively," the company said.

Anthropic said it is "continuing to invest in new capacity" and will provide further updates as availability improves, leaving open the possibility that today's terms could still change for lower-tier plans down the line.

Reactions on X

Since the first extension, Anthropic users have been vocal about the company's indecision on social media. They criticised the company for not having a plan in place about the rollout of the model and for taking users' time and loyalty for granted.

"it's incredible how little foresight anthropic has," one user wrote, while another said, "Fastest aura loss I’ve seen in a long time…"

Some mocked the company's shifting dates. "Wow, I can’t believe it. Nobody saw this coming. What an incredibly unpredictable piece of news, it totally caught me off guard. Wow."
