The spirit of enterprise: How Jaipur’s MSMEs and startups are reshaping Rajasthan’s global ambitions

In recent times, Jaipur has rapidly positioned itself as a key growth engine of the economy and industrial sector for Rajasthan, and the state’s global ambitions. From its expertise in handcrafted textiles and intricate jewelry to world-class carpet manufacturing, the city is seamlessly bridging heritage with entrepreneurship.

With an ecosystem of over 55 lakh micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), Jaipur serves as a vital business hub presenting immense opportunities for employment generation, creating diverse roles for millions of local artisans and skilled workers, while it inspires a new generation of entrepreneurs to look beyond the mundane and innovate.


The continuous policy support, grassroots talent, the spirit to stand out, and commercial enterprise make Jaipur an ideal landscape for scalable growth, economic empowerment, and global trade.

To understand this pulse and the driving spirit of enterprise, the ET team talked to an array of entrepreneurs from the city, a day ahead of the Jaipur ET Business Growth Summit 2026. The initiative was an attempt to bring forth, to spotlight, the ecosystem builders and the leaders, and their authentic, human stories driving the region's commercial surge, bridging the gap between grassroots enterprise and global scale.

Voices shaping Rajasthan’s enterprise

Our interview with Dr K.L. Jain, President of the Rajasthan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, mapped out Rajasthan’s evolutionary journey from an agrarian-focused state during independence to a rapidly expanding industrial powerhouse. Today, Rajasthan stands as a key engine for manufacturing, trade, and enterprise across 32 major industry sectors.

Jain highlighted the massive MSME footprint and trade potential in Jaipur, boosting roughly 12 lakh MSMEs and an export value exceeding Rupees 1 lakh crore. The conversation pivoted around leveraging government policies, empowering female entrepreneurs, and guiding early-stage startups towards maintaining a commitment to continuous learning and strategic marketing.

Our next conversation was with Nand Kishore Chaudhary, the founder of Jaipur Rugs. A first-generation entrepreneur, Chaudhary started his business with a loan of 5000 Rupees from his father, a bicycle, two looms, and his principles of dignity. Today, he is one of the world's largest rug manufacturers and is often referred to as the ‘Gandhi of the Carpet Industry’.

Chaudhary’s Jaipur Rugs is now partnering with over 40,000 artisans, more than 90% of them women, whose work is showcased and loved across the world. What makes the carpets unique is the company's creative freedom, enabling artisans to design rugs that tell genuine stories across global stores. The vision behind the local-to-global journey of Jaipur Rugs has been based on emotionally connecting the grassroots work with a global audience.

Jaipur offers emerging opportunities for new startups every year. Our interaction with Chairman Anand Poddar and Secretary Sunny Kulshreshtha of the Federation of Unicorn Innovative Startups and Industry (FUISI), highlighted how the organisation brings together industry experts to guide founders on scaling and navigating policies to build a sustainable ecosystem in Rajasthan.

This documentary was our way of showing the spirit of enterprise across Jaipur's emerging startups and MSMEs, which have significantly driven the economy and changed the entire landscape, opening a gate of potential for India in terms of exports.
