Ahmedabad has highest appetite for erotica, says startup BlissBasket.com

AHMEDABAD: People in Ahmedabad are the most voracious readers of sex literature in the country, says BlissBasket.com, a startup online retailer dedicated to selling erotic books and other adult products such as sex toys, edible lingerie and condoms.

Ahmedabad accounts for 27% of erotica the Pune-based portal sells.

“From ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ to ‘Complete Illustrated Kama Sutra’ to ‘Sex is Fun’, Ahmedabad holds no bar to select erotic literature,” said Mayur Masrani, founder of Blissbasket, which delivers its products in plain boxes with no identity mark to protect consumers’ privacy.

While consumers from Bengaluru buy the most number of sex games from the site Delhi has the biggest appetite for edible lingerie.

Masrani, who is of Gujarati origin, said Ahmedabad is currently Blissbasket’s largest market, accounting for 21% of its overall sales. It’s followed by Kolkata and Chennai with contribution of 18% and 16%, respectively. He said 61% of its consumers from Ahmedabad are men.

Masrani, who launched Blissbasket in January last year, hopes to attract private equity investment this year. He said the response to his ‘romantic’ online shop has been excellent with sales growing about 45% every month. The websites currently records about 600 transactions per day with average ticket size of Rs 1,600. Masrani said he intends to have more than 1,200 unique product items, or SKUs, up from more than 500 now. He had launched Blissbasket with 300 SKUs.
